The 6888th postal battalion, also known as the Six Triple Eight consisted of 855 women. Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams, the highest-ranking female black officer, led the battalion. She lobbied for them to go overseas, which succeeded, and made them the first and only all-female battalion to go overseas in World War II. It was a rough journey with many close calls with German ships, leading to sharp maneuvers that sent pots and pans flying, causing injuries. When they arived to europe in Febuary of 1945 they were greeted by a V1 roket also know as a buzz bomb and had to scramble on the icy ground to get to shelter. After there eventful arrival they started on there assignment of sorting, redirecting and mailing 6 months of backloged mail to from soldiers and there familys.
